KEM Hospital Sends MBBS Student on Forced Leave Over Cadaver Remarks; Inquiry Panel Formed Amid Widespread Outrage
KEM Hospital and Medical College in Mumbai has placed MBBS student Sejal Pawar on a 15-day forced leave after controversial remarks about cadavers during a comedy show sparked nationwide outrage. A five-member inquiry panel has been formed, while Maharashtra Cyber Police has registered a case against several individuals linked to the viral videos.
As part of the action taken by the institution, Pawar has been barred from entering the college campus and hostel premises during the leave period. She has also been prohibited from participating in any academic, extracurricular, or other college-related activities until further notice.
The medical college administration has constituted a five-member inquiry panel to investigate the matter. The committee, comprising a retired professor, a senior journalist, and three faculty members from the medical college, has been directed to submit its report within seven days.
According to the preliminary findings, the individual seen in the viral video making the controversial remarks has been identified as Sejal Pawar. The institution has described the comments as inappropriate and unacceptable.
Hospital authorities stated that Pawar became emotional during the inquiry proceedings and was continuously crying while giving her statement. She has reportedly expressed regret over the incident and has also apologised to her family.
The administration said that, considering concerns regarding her safety, Pawar has been handed over to her family. Officials further noted that the intense public scrutiny and reactions on social media may have affected her mental well-being. As a result, the institution has advised her to seek professional counselling to prevent depression or severe psychological stress. Special attention is also being paid to her mental health during this period.
The controversy erupted after Pawar allegedly made remarks comparing the sizes of male cadavers' genitalia during the comedy show. The comments quickly spread online and drew widespread condemnation from social media users across the country.
The incident also involved an information technology professional, Himanshu Jangra, who came under fire for making the controversial "Rs 370 biryani" remarks during the same event. Following public backlash and the viral circulation of the video, Jangra was dismissed by his employers.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Cyber Police has registered a case in connection with the viral videos featuring comedian Pranit More, Himanshu Jangra, Sejal Pawar, and several other individuals. Authorities have named More, Jangra, Pawar, and others in the case as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident has sparked a broader debate on professional ethics, public conduct, and accountability in the digital age. With disciplinary action already initiated and a formal investigation underway, the findings of the inquiry panel are expected to play a crucial role in determining the next course of action by the institution and law enforcement agencies.
